Location

Concept
A mobile art installation exploring the possibilities of studying the night sky and adapted for travel to remote areas of Iceland where the atmosphere can be exceptionally clear and terrain is only accessible on foot.

The observatory is worn as a suit and then unfolded into a shelter, giving the occupant protection against the elements in both modes. The reflective dome offers a means of recording and viewing 360° of the night sky while lying within the shelter.

DAY MODE - SUIT

All components of the structure collapse and fold into a flexible and insulating suit. The viewing dome is worn as a helmet - protecting the wearer from wind and rain.

Day: View from within dome helmet

NIGHT MODE - SHELTER

The suit unwraps into a waterproof and windproof one-man shelter. The mirrored dome allows the occupant to view the sky while lying within the protected environment. A camera on a second portable tripod outside simultaneously records the 360-degree reflection of the night sky.

Night: 360 nightsky reflections on dome
